Herbert Lotz - Artist Statement
These photographs were taken in 1968 while I was serving in the U.S. Army in the Viet Nam Conflict. They were taken in South Viet Nam, mostly at the base camp of the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi, where I served as a radio operator. I wanted to have a record of my time spent there as well as continue my work in photography.
The photographs of these young men were taken in quiet times, in sleep, off duty, watching a U.S.O. show. What I see in their faces is what holds my attention. I find that I don’t want to editorialize too much about the images.
I appreciate Margo Donaldson for her attention to my photographs and Miles Conrad for exhibiting them.
