Laura Moriarty - Artist Statement
My sculptural paintings are a play on plate tectonics, where landmasses continually drift apart and crash together, piling one episode upon another in precarious ways. Geologists know that rocks can tell stories if you know how to read them; I apply a similar principle to painting. Using the process of making as a tool for experimentation, I consider the pure medium fodder for a playfully conceptual spin on scientific knowledge, natural phenomena, and the passing of time. .
My work has evolved into a kind of forensic study, or faux-archaeology. I think about these paintings as environments, communities or civilizations on the brink of collapse. Using encaustic paint as my medium, I brush on layers of color, and then free the painting from its support by scraping, compressing, rolling and cutting the pigmented beeswax in various ways. I then reassemble the painting, creating complex, organic clusters that are a meditation on the way the earth operates.
