Lois Epperson-Gale - Artist Statement

I am interested in posing questions, but what is most fascinating to me is the indescribable. My work considers psychological, physical and spiritual responses to the external world. It is a persistent contemplation, inspection, and exploration of the natural landscape, the body, organic processes, and temporal physicality. The repetition of forms represents my obsessive pattern of questioning and the passage of time.

I ponder states. Not Idaho or Delaware. States of being. Stagnation, transformation, flux, motion, imbalance, regeneration, perfection, decay, disintegration, and preservation. A space where the perfection of natural processes meets human inadequacy. Where history, memory and experience are encapsulated. Duality. Repulsion and attraction. Balance and imbalance. Perfection and imperfection. And the search for the spaces in between the extremes.

The materials I use relate to the body in some capacity. They include wax, encaustic, oil paint, pastels, found objects, and photographs. My interaction with these substances creates an environment where I am able to think with my hands.
