Rodney
Thompson - Artist Statement
I strive to find a balance between a sense of simplicity and a depth of visual interest in the creation of my art. How to achieve both simultaneously is a challenge. I work with divisions of space, often loosely based on grids or geometric shapes, but with an influence of organic nature. Encaustic lends itself well to my needs. Through layering of materials and marks I can maintain a simple division of the space while creating a richness of texture and colors through the spatial depth inherent in the waxy translucency. Much of my imagery offers a sense of openness, vast landscapes or minimalist interiors, which suggest spaciousness and unrestrained possibilities. Other work utilizes repetition as a meditative device, both in the creative process and in the viewing. Simple everyday materials and objects, selected for their inherent beauty, often become part of my art. I work with warm, earthy colors that, combined with simplicity of design, evoke a sense of calm and tranquility.
